One of the most highly anticipated showdowns in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs will have the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on their rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers.
Fans expect this to be an exciting, intense series considering the longstanding rivalry between the two Keystone State teams. In addition to this, the league will get to see the face-off of two teams hungry for playoff hockey.
The Pens blew out of the water the low expectations people had for them this season. They had been projected to yet again miss the playoffs after a rough few seasons following their last playoff appearance in 2022. But they ended up finishing second in the Metropolitan Division with 98 points.
The Flyers, meanwhile, have not made a postseason appearance since the 2020 season.
So there are lofty expectations from the fanbases for both teams, and the stakes are high.
The Pens will have to be ready to face a young, fast team that is playing their best hockey.
The Flyers have a few advantages over the Pens, with the biggest one being their young core. Some of the Flyers’ top point scorers include center Trevor Zegras, who is 25 and racked up 67 points, and Matvei Michkov, who is 21 with 51 points. Meanwhile, the Pens’ top five scorers are all over the age of 30.
Additionally, the Flyers’ most recent game against the Montreal Canadiens displayed the young talent of their supporting lines. And while the Pens have notable young talent, such as Ben Kindel and Egor Chinakov, Pittsburgh continues to rely on their veteran core.
With their youth, the Flyers are also extremely fast on the ice. They create chaos in front of the net when on the offensive, and they make it a priority to make as many shots on net as they can. But most importantly, they play a very strong defensive game, something the Penguins still continue to struggle with even now.
Going into their first playoff game this Saturday, the Pens have to take the strengths of Philadelphia into serious account. If they don’t, it could cost them their chance at a run for the Stanley Cup.
