At round 13 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship over the weekend, Cole Davies showed that he is the future of the 250 class, and Hunter Lawrence was able to get another win in the 450 class.
Davies won the race with a comfortable 16-second lead over teammate Nate Thrasher. When the checkered was waved, Seth Hammaker crossed the finish line in third but was penalized two positions for a track cut, bumping him down to fifth.
This left Club MX Yamaha rider Devin Simonson in third, giving him his first career podium. Daxton Bennick was bumped up from fifth to fourth with Hammaker’s penalty.
Davies was sixth off of the start and was able to work his way into first within the first five minutes. His skill in the whoops is unmatched, and he makes up time and passes through this section typically.
Hammaker had two wrecks on the day that effectively ruined his chances of being able to win on Saturday. His first wreck happened when his foot peg got caught on a tuff block, and his second wreck came from making contact with Bennick after he broke traction through the pit lane.
This may have been the final blow to Hammaker’s hopes of being able to win his first supercross title this year.
With Haiden Deegan graduating from the 250 class, Davies is looking to become the next face of the 250 class. He has six wins out of 16 starts since his debut last year.
Davies has a sizeable lead in the 250 East class, with 161 points to second place Hammaker’s 142. With a 19-point lead and three races left, Davies should feel confident in being able to win the title, as long as he continues to perform as he has been.
In the 450 class, Eli Tomac and Hunter Lawrence were tied in points going into this race, but with Lawrence’s victory on Saturday, he now has the solo points lead.
Lawrence was able to extend his points lead to 10 points over Ken Roczen, who finished third after a rough day of racing, and 15 points on Tomac.
Roczen led the race for the first 12 minutes, but after a series of mistakes and errors on his part, he was passed by Lawrence and then defending champion Cooper Webb. Tomac had a rough day on the track and took 12th place on the day.
On a positive note, privateer Justin Hill of Team Tedder Racing was running in a podium position for most of the race and was able to finish fifth at the end of the race.
This weekend marks the second weekend that racing takes place in the afternoon, with qualifying starting at 9 a.m. and the racing action starting at 3 p.m. The battles shift to Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland.
The qualifying, racing, and the post-race show all will be shown on Peacock. With titles heating up, this will be a great race for the nation to be able to watch.
