The Baldwin baseball team defeated Blackhawk High School on Friday, 3-0.
Sophomore Hudson McKain said the win was a big one for the Highlanders.
“Blackhawk was the best team in 4A and they were undefeated, so to beat them really gives our team confidence,” McKain said.
The Highlanders are now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in section in 5A. The win marked their third consecutive shutout, as the Highlanders kept McKeesport scoreless during their two-game series earlier last week. Baldwin has also won four of their last five games.
McKain credited Baldwin’s pitchers as standouts from the game.
“We pitched very well. I think we gave up like three hits all game,” McKain said. “Tyler Dingus and Devan Stanziano pitched really well.”
Junior Matt Musial also gave credit to the Highlanders’ defense.
“We pitched and fielded really well,” Musial said. “We overall just played a very team game, and we played one of our better games this year.”
Musial praised the Cougars for their ability to get outs in the field.
“Blackhawk played pretty good defensively as well,” Musial said.
Despite the win, there are a few things that the Highlanders can work on for the remainder of the season.
“We need to be better on hitting with runners in scoring position,” Musial said.
The baseball team’s next two games are a section series against Gateway, with today’s game being at home and Tuesday’s game away.
