Baldwin’s Unified Track team competed in its first meet of the season on Wednesday, finishing in second place against Canon-Mac and Belle Vernon.
Transition coordinator Eric Jankowski believed the team competed well.
“Baldwin scored well in the 400 meters, earning a first-, second-, or third-place finish in over half of the divisions competing. Baldwin also did well in the mini-jav and the shot put,” Jankowski said.
The Highlanders had some standout athletes in the mini-jav and shot put events.
“In mini-jav, Baldwin earned four first-place finishes in their respective divisions from Anna Adams, Ella Schwarzmiller, Becca Wilds, and Madelyn Behr. In shot put, Din Goawala, Nora Eckert, and Lukas Sleeman all earned first places in their division to provide some needed points,” Jankowski said.
The team does well with communicating and always cheering each other on during events, senior Kirsten Fohr said.
Jankowski saw team member Nathan Davis as a standout player.
“Nathan Davis was a standout in the 4×400 relay as he almost overcame a huge deficit of 200 meters in the final lap, coming up just short,” Jankowski said.
Fohr agreed.
“Nathan Davis ran really fast in both of his running events, especially when he was the anchor for the 4×4,” Fohr said.
Fohr gave credit to Belle Vernon for their performance.
“Belle Vernon had a really good jumper on their team. We were all surprised when we watched him,” Fohr said.
Belle Vernon also had other strong events, Jankowski said.
“Belle Vernon scored very strongly in the 100 meters, earning a first-, second-, or third-place finish in over half of the divisions competing,” Jankowski said.
This was the team’s only away meet; the rest will take place at Baldwin High School. The next meet is on Wednesday.
