In the March Madness championship game on Monday, Michigan defeated UConn 69-63 in a spectacular game.
For Michigan, Yaxel Lendeborg and Elliot Cadeau led the way against the Huskies, as both had double-digit points and high plus-to-minus ratios. A plus-to-minus ratio compares positive actions, like points, rebounds, and steals to negative ones, like points allowed, turnovers, and mistakes.
Morez Johnson Jr. and Aday Mara played huge supporting roles in the game as they supported Lendeborg and Cadeau through the game, giving the Wolverines second chances at scoring and playing hard defense.
Michigan had great defense throughout the game and made sure the UConn guards and forwards like Alex Karaban could not make it to the rim.
Trey McKenney did a great job at the end of the game as he got a rebound and made two free throws to ensure the win.
The Wolverines did not miss many free throws as a team.
UConn was able to force Michigan into a slow-paced game, which helped the Huskies’ odds of winning; however, this was unsuccessful for them.
Tarris Reed Jr. was a big reason why UConn stayed in the game, as he ended with 13 points and 14 rebounds, which gave the Huskies much-needed second chances.
But the Wolverines fought a hard game against the Huskies and deserved the win by the end of the game, earning their first championship since 1989. This win also snapped a 26-year title drought for the Big Ten conference, and stopped UConn’s dynasty hopes as the Huskies fell just short.
