Verstappen Racing crossed the line in first at the Nürburgring Nordschleife on March 21, just to be disqualified after it was found that the team used seven sets of tires instead of the maximum of six sets.
The extra set of tires emerged from a procedural error by crew members, who apparently miscounted the amount of tires. They used the seventh set during qualifying while practicing driver changes and tire changes.
Verstappen said he believes that the disqualification will help keep the team more on point in the pits and with every aspect of the team.
A general consensus from fans is that it was an honest mistake, considering that the team is new. Still, this disqualification was a large letdown for many fans who may have started watching GT3 because of Verstappen.
The team of drivers for the race was Max Verstappen, Daniel Juncadella, and Jules Gounon. The team raced in a Mercedes AMG GT3. Before the disqualification, the team had won by almost a minute in the four-hour race.
Verstappen is newer to the GT3 scene, creating his team in September and competing in the Nürburgring NLS series. The team is scheduled to race in the 24 hours of Nürburgring in May, which will be a large step for Verstappen after only competing in GT3 for a few months and Formula 1 for years.
The team appears to have a bright future ahead after the team’s first finish in NLS race 9, where Verstappen debuted winning the race in a Ferrari 296 GT3 with teammate Chris Lulham.
