With the Final Four in the Women’s March Madness tournament determined, the University of Connecticut Huskies are an easy fan favorite.
After an undefeated season and 34-0 record, UConn is favored to win the tournament by 45.7% of fans who filled out brackets. There is a significant gap to the next-highest predicted winner, which is UCLA, with only 15% of fans choosing them to win.
UConn beat a majority of their opponents by double digits before entering the tournament, and they have yet to have a close game against their first four competitors. UConn has taken on these first opponents in the tournament with a great deal of confidence, keeping a high-energy environment.
The top two contributors for UConn are senior guard Azzi Fudd and sophomore forward Sarah Strong. Strong is the team’s lead scorer and rebounder, as well as having the most blocks and steals. For Fudd, it’s her exceptional three-point shooting range and finishing ability at the rim that make her an offensive threat.
UCLA, UConn’s biggest threat, went 31-1 in the regular season. They have competed well in the tournament so far, winning the first four games by wide margins.
The other Final Four teams are Texas and South Carolina.
Some exciting earlier moments in the tournament included Duke’s game-winning buzzer beater against Louisiana State, and Virginia, a 10 seed, beating Iowa, a two seed, in an upset that went into double overtime.
All four No. 1 seeds have made the Final Four and will compete on Friday in hopes of moving on to the championship game.
