The Baldwin softball team walked it off on Sunday to beat Connellsville 3-2, thanks to an RBI single by junior Melina DeFelice.
“I did not realize it was a walk-off at first. But when I did realize, it was super exciting because I have never hit a walk-off before,” DeFelice said.
Senior Mackenzie Bowen said senior Avery Herrington played a good game offensively and defensively for Baldwin.
“Avery played really well behind the plate and she scored a couple of runs for us as well,” Bowen said.
Bowen said junior Teaghan Scanlon also played a solid game.
“Teaghan did really well with maintaining composure on the field,” Bowen said. “She had really good at-bats, coming clutch when we needed her.”
DeFelice said the team’s defense has been playing well.
“Our defense has been really good recently and we have been making all the plays that we need to,” DeFelice said.
The Highlanders can work on adjusting to the other team’s pitcher before it gets too late.
“We have to work on adjusting to different pitchers earlier in the game,” Bowen said. “We have to work on not leaving runners on and having better quality at bats.”
The Highlanders are off to a 2-0 start in section play but they know that nothing is guaranteed and that they have to keep working.
“It’s a great feeling. It shows how hard we have worked in the off season to prepare us for this,” Bowen said. “But we know going forward in our section anything can happen and no team should be underestimated.”
Baldwin will go on the road today to take on Bethel Park at 4 p.m.
