FIFA passed a new rule ahead of the 2027 Women’s World Cup in hopes of increasing female leadership in women’s soccer. While this can bring many positive changes, negatives also come along with it.
This rule will require all FIFA-regulated women’s teams to have a woman as either head coach or assistant coach and to have two female staff on the bench, including one on the medical team.
One positive change that this rule will bring is representation. Currently, there is not enough female leadership in women’s soccer.
In the highest level women’s league in the country, only two out of 14 coaches are female. At the 2023 Women’s World Cup, only 12 out of 32 coaches were female, and there was only one female coach who made it to the semifinal round.
Women are extremely underrepresented in their own sport. FIFA is working to change this with their new rule.
FIFA’s chief football officer, Jill Ellis, is a strong advocate for women in coaching, as she led the U.S. Women’s National Team to two World Cup wins.
“There are simply not enough women in coaching today. We must do more to accelerate change by creating clearer pathways, expanding opportunities, and increasing the visibility for women on our sidelines,” Ellis said.
Another positive is that players can build better relationships with the coaching staff. While players can have great relationships with male coaches, most players prefer female coaches because they make them feel represented and understood.
One extremely negative change is that more developing countries will struggle to find female coaches, as most women’s soccer teams in those countries do not have much history.
While it would be best for them to have a female coach, it would be even better for them to have a male coach who has played professionally and can help them develop more. Once the country’s soccer program becomes developed, then they should absolutely have a women’s coach.
This rule is controversial, as there is no rule for men’s soccer teams to have female leadership representation. Soccer fans wonder if this rule will eventually be implemented in the men’s leagues as well, or if it will stay limited to just the women’s side.
While the U.S. Women’s Team is very advanced, with many women on the coaching and medical staff, not all countries are as advanced. Hopefully, this rule will bring positive change for everyone, and women will become more represented in their own sport.
