The opening weekend of March Madness featured some great games and some major upsets.
The biggest upset was number 1-seeded Florida, which won the national championship last year, losing to number 9 seed Iowa in the second round, 73-72.
Iowa was in control for a lot of the game, but Florida came back to take a lead toward the end of the game. Yet Iowa got a three-pointer at the very end to get the upset victory, disappointing everyone who had picked Florida to win March Madness.
Texas is another big March Madness story. In the first round, the 11 seed Longhorns defeated BYU, 79-71, as 7-foot-tall sophomore center Matas Vokietaitis had 23 points and 16 rebounds. BYU freshman forward AJ Dybantsa had an unbelievable game, putting up 35 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
In the second round, Texas upset the number 3 seed Gonzaga to continue the Cinderella run. They play number 2 Purdue on Thursday. There were some other upsets in the first round.
The number 9 seed TCU upset the number eight seed Ohio State, 66-64. Junior Xaiver Edmonds of TCU hit a layup with 4.3 seconds left to win the game. Also, number 12 seed High Point upset number 5 seed Wisconsin, 83-82. Senior Chase Johnston, who specializes in three-pointers, made his first two-point basket of the season to give High Point the lead with 11.7 seconds left.
TCU and High Point both ended up losing their second-round games.
Virginia Commonwealth upset North Carolina in the first round in overtime, 82-78. Sophomore guard Terrence Hill Jr. had a 36-point game, leading his team to victory. But then Virginia Commonwealth’s run was over in the second round by the number 3 seed Illinois, 76-55.
Finally, top seed Duke was down 13 at half to Siena in the first round, but rallied to win, 71-65.
