Even though Baldwin’s ice hockey team did not make the playoffs, they ended their season on a high note by beating Shaler on the Titans’ senior night, 4-1, providing hope for a better year next season.
Shaler had a better record, but Baldwin walked away with the win, which ended up being one of the most memorable moments of the season.
“They came in thinking they were going to crush us,” sophomore Timmy Bush said.
Bush scored two of Baldwin’s four goals that game. The sophomore is one reason why the team is optimistic for next year.
“He was one of the driving forces in the game, and getting two goals – his first two of the season – could not have come at a better time,” sophomore Austin Klein said. “He stepped up when we needed it most and gave the team a big spark, which helped us win the game.”
Klein said the team’s biggest accomplishment this year was not just that one win but the overall jump in wins with a young team. The team’s record this year was 5-15, an improvement from last year’s 3-17.
“The amount of wins we had this season was our biggest accomplishment,” Klein said. “Being able to work the system, we had to find success when we could.”
At the start of the season, Klein struggled with finding his footing because he took on a bigger role this year than the previous year. He had to take on a leadership role along with being a player on the power play.
“I’m willing and ready to step up into a bigger role, but I don’t know how many kids are ready to fully take that leap just yet,” Klein said.
With only five upperclassmen, Baldwin was forced to adjust its style of play. Instead of relying on a high level of skill across the lineup, the team leaned into a more physical approach and focused on team structure.
“With three seniors and two captains graduating, Jacob Kaercher needs to continue to make the impact he already has, but step up from a number three to a number one leadership-wise,” Klein said.
Kaercher, a junior, thinks he will be able to step up to the role next season.
“I’m going to try to lead the team as an example, work hard, and keep up team traditions,” Kaercher said.
Bush has high hopes for the upcoming season.
“The team’s main focus for next year is to make the playoffs or even win a playoff game,” Bush said.
