For the eighth time, Eli Tomac has won at the Daytona for the annual supercross race. He is now the most decorated rider at this track with this mark, surpassing Richard Petty, a NASCAR legend, who formerly held the record with seven wins.
Tomac, who is nicknamed “Daytomac” at this track, has an average 1.5 place finish at this track. He has had 11 starts at this track, and he has been in the top five for every race and on the podium nine times.
He now has won at this track on four different manufacturers. He has won on a Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and now a KTM.
His dominance at this track has given fans with multiple memorable moments at this venue.
In 2015, Tomac piloted his Honda through the whoops while riding a wheelie. He made this challenging act look extremely easy. This clip is over 10 years old now, but it is still highly reshared and one of Tomac’s career highlights. In 2020, Tomac rode behind Ken Roczen for most of the race, but he turned it up in the final minutes and was able to pass Roczen.
Like every year, as soon as the race was over, fans stormed the track towards the podium to celebrate with the riders. This is the only supercross race where the fans can get up close with the riders on the podium.
This year, as Tomac was picking up his eighth Daytona Supercross win trophy, it broke on him and chipped his tooth.
The 3-D trophy consists of a trapezoid shaped base, with a sculpture of a racer on the top. When Tomac picked up the trophy by the sculpture, it broke off of the base, sending half of the trophy into his face. He walked away for a few minutes, and when he came back, he revealed that he had chipped his tooth in half.
He went on to spray the fans with champagne and celebrate as a winner at Daytona, again.
To round out the podium, Hunter Lawrence took second and Roczen took third. Lawrence still has a one point lead over Tomac in the title hunt.
In the 250 class, Seth Hammaker had an impressive ride to a win, after wrecking extremely hard into the face of a jump during qualifying. He did not let the wreck slow him down, and he showed no sign of injury. Cole Davies took second and Pierce Brown took third.
Hammaker’s win for Kawasaki marks the end of the winning streak Yamaha had in the 250 class. Yamaha had won every 250 race this season up until this weekend.
This weekend viewers on Peacock can view the racing action in Indianapolis during the day. Qualifying starts at 12:30 p.m. Eastern and the racing action gets going at 7 p.m. The ninth event of the year marks the halfway point of the season, and it is sure to become another exciting evening inside of Lucas Oil Stadium.
