The NFL Combine is an event in which invited players can showcase their talents and prove that they’re ready for the next level of football. The event includes strength and speed measurements and drills for specific positions.
Receivers complete catching drills, while quarterbacks have many passing drills. Defensive backs have drills guarding receivers and swiveling. Drills for linemen are mainly focused on strength and one-on-one drills against other prospects.
The combine works in phases, with the first phase starting on Thursday and ending Friday. This phase lets kickers, defensive linemen, and linebackers take the field and prove their worth. Notable players from these positions include Florida kicker Trey Smack, Clemson defensive lineman Peter Woods, and Pitt linebacker Kyle Louis.
The second phase starts on Friday and ends on Saturday. This phase provides a look at the tight ends and defensive backs declaring for the draft. Premier athletes include Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers and Clemson defensive back R.J. Mickens.
The third phase starts on Saturday and runs until Sunday. This phase showcases quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs. Important participants include Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, and Arizona State wide receiver Makai Lemon.
Projected first overall pick Fernando Mendoza will not be throwing at the combine this year. However, he will throw at Indiana’s pro day on April 1.
The fourth and final phase of the combine presents the offensive lineman prospects. This phase runs from Sunday through Monday. Top prospects include Memphis tackle Chris Adams, Florida’s center Jake Slaughter, and Oregon guard Emmanuel Pregnon.
The combine takes place in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
