The University of North Carolina women’s lacrosse team, the best team in the country, has opened its season with four wins, pushing their overall win streak to 26.
After being undefeated last season, the Tar Heels opened this year by winning 19-11 against James Madison University. This win started the team off to have another great season.
Sophomore Chloe Humphrey, an attacker, scored the first goal of the season just a minute and 10 seconds in. She ended her game with three goals and four assists.
A player who really showed out in this game was senior Darcy Felter, a midfielder, who scored five goals. Felter was quick to the net and put pressure on JMU, forcing them to go into a timeout.Freshman attacker Reese King scored her first career goal halfway through the fourth quarter. Junior Kaleigh Harden, a midfielder, then scored the last goal of the game.
Then UNC went on to take down Syracuse University 13-9, keeping their streak alive.
Sophomore Kate Levy, a midfielder, started the Heels off with her first goals of the season. Though Syracuse came back and got the next two, senior attacker Caroline Godine got the next to make the score 3-2 at the beginning of the second quarter.
Humphrey then evened the score at 3-3. This was a great game for Humphrey, as she earned her 20th hat trick in 24 career games.
Both teams fought for the lead the entire game. Syracuse did not go down without putting up a fight; it all came down to the last 10 minutes of the game.
Humphrey and Felter both contributed to the Heels getting a three-point lead. Syracuse got one back, but senior Kiley Mottice quickly came back with a goal to keep their lead. Levy secured her hat trick and the Heels’ last goal of the game off an assist from Humphrey.
Next, the Heels played a great game against Ohio State on Friday and won 22-9.
The Heels had five players secure hat tricks, and Humphrey led with five goals. Sophomores Addison Pattillo, an attacker, and Eliza Obsurn, a midfielder, both matched their career high, scoring four goals.
While the Heels kept the lead the entire game, Mottice and Levy secured their hat tricks.
Finally, on Sunday, the Heels dominated Louisville, with the final score being 24-3.
The Heels had 13 goal scorers, with Humphrey leading with six goals and three assists. Levy started the game with a goal in less than a minute.
Osburn followed Levy’s goal just seconds later. Osburn had a great game, scoring twice and causing turnovers with the five ground balls she got.
UNC’s ability to work together is amazing and a huge part of the reason why they are so good. They score a lot, but also have a significant amount of assists, which is key to a good team.
Just four games into the season, Humphrey leads the team with nine assists. Godine trails behind with eight.
UNC’s next game will be played against Florida State on Friday.
