Five Baldwin wrestlers competed at WPIALs over the weekend, with freshman Shamil Islamov qualifying for regionals.
Islamov placed seventh with a record of 3-2. He will go to regionals this weekend, and if he finishes in the top five, he will qualify for states.
Among Baldwin’s other wrestlers, sophomore Aiden Guthrie and junior Mikey Griffiths were one round away from placing, both ending up with a 1-2 record. Freshman Akhmed Yusupov and senior Parraish Brunson both finished 0-1.
Islamov said he would have liked to have won even more matches.
“I think I could’ve done better,” Islamov said. “I had close matches and I think if I had kept wrestling, I could’ve won.”
Islamov will be watching the films of his matches from the tournament to prepare for regionals.
He said several other Baldwin wrestlers also competed well.
“Aiden Guthrie and Mikey Griffiths made it to the second day and they did pretty well,” Islamov said.
Guthrie, meanwhile, said one of the opponents he faced was particularly strong. Still, he was happy with how he improved his patience this season.
