Senior Rosemary Becker competed in the WPIBL girls individual championships on Thursday.
This year, female bowlers needed an average score of 130 in the regular season to qualify. Becker, who is in her fourth year on the bowling team, averaged a score of 148.
“I’ve been on the bowling team my whole high school career,” Becker said.
Thursday was rough for Becker, with a difficult oil pattern on the lane making it tough for her to get her usual hook.
“As soon as I got to a piece toward the back, it stopped moving completely, and it just went straight,” Becker said. “I tried moving left, but the hook wouldn’t line up center. It was still to the right.”
She said one competitor had a creative way to beat the pattern.
“One of the girls I was on the lanes with grabbed an alley ball and was just standing and throwing it center,” Becker said. “She just kept striking it, and she ended up in the top 30.”
Despite Becker’s struggles on Thursday, her average met the qualifying threshold for regionals.
The bowling team as a whole will compete in regionals next Friday.
