The U.S. women’s hockey team beat Canada 2-1 in overtime to win an Olympic gold medal on Thursday.
It came down to the final few minutes of the game, as Canada was up 1-0 with about two minutes left to go in the third period. The U.S. pulled its goalie in a last-ditch effort to score and play overtime against Canada.
Hilary Knight scored the game-tying goal off a brilliant break by the team, which set her up to score.
In overtime, America and Canada both fought hard to try and secure the win, but a game-winning goal by Team USA’s Megan Keller shut the Canadian team down.
Keller got the puck down the ice off a pass from Taylor Heise and made a great move to get past a Canadian defender and score the goal. The goal has been called “Keller’s Golden Goal.”
The U.S. women’s team is being called the greatest of all time for the United States. They had been heavily favored to win the gold. The team also includes the first Black player to make the Olympic team, Laila Edwards.
The women’s team has medaled every year in the Olympics since 1998, and Knight, the U.S. captain, became the all-time point leader in her fifth Olympic Games. The team likes to play fast and physical under Head Coach John Wroblewski.
The last time the team won a gold medal was in 2018.
The U.S. men’s hockey team is up next, with a semifinal game against Slovakia today. If they win that one, and Canada defeats Finland, then the Americans and Canadians will face off again in the gold medal game.
