Pro/Con: Olympic superiority
The Summer Olympics allow people to watch the best athletes in the world compete against each other in popular, warm-weather sports.
The Games include combat sports, aquatic sports, and much more. The most popular, however, are gymnastics and ball sports.
Women’s gymnastics was the most-watched sport, bringing in 41.5 million viewers during the day one qualifiers at the last Summer Games, in 2024. It also drew 12.7 million viewers for the team final.
Men’s basketball is also raking in viewers with a peak of 22.7 million viewers for the gold medal game two years ago. This event is mainly successful because it features players from the NBA playing for their respective countries. It allows fans to watch Stephen Curry and LeBron James play on the same team, something unheard of in the NBA.
While the Summer Olympics are very popular, they are equally exciting. Many close matchups occur, as seen through the men’s soccer final in 2024.
The match ended 5-3, as Spain defeated France. The game went into extra time, and it won praise from fans.
During the 2024 Paris Olympics, an astounding 17 world records were set. One of these was Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis’ ninth pole vault record, reaching 6.25 meters.
Also, over 125 Olympic records were broken during the games. One of these was Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem’s javelin record at 92.97 meters.
As exciting as the Summer Olympics are currently, they are going to get even more incredible. During the 2028 games in Los Angeles, there are many new sports being added.
These sports include flag football, cricket, lacrosse, among others. These additions will bring more publicity to the games.
The Winter Olympics, which alternate with the Summer Games every two years, are growing in popularity.
Sports such as ice hockey, figure skating, skiing, and snowboarding are among the most popular among sports fans.
Figure skating is among the leaders in TV ratings during every Winter Olympics. For the current Winter Games, 20-year-old figure skater Alysa Liu came out of retirement and earned two gold medals.
One of the most popular sports for fans is hockey. On the men’s side, the Olympics features many NHL players competing for their home country, which creates exciting matchups.
The American and Canadian men’s teams are rivals. Each has reached the semifinals this year.
On the women’s side, the U.S.-Canada rivalry is even more intense. On Thursday, Team USA tied their game late and then won the gold medal in overtime.
Then there is curling. It is considered one of the original sports in the Winter Games, dating back to 1924. During each Winter Olympics, more people seem to become interested in this sport.
The 2030 Winter Olympics will be held in the French Alps. They will be adding Ice climbing, ski mountaineering, and cyclocross.
The Winter Olympics are a good way to spend time with family and friends who also enjoy winter sports, or any sports in general.
