Six Baldwin wrestlers qualified for WPIAL individual championships over the weekend.
Freshman Shamil Islamov placed third. Freshman Akhmed Yusupov, sophomore Aiden Gutherie, and senior Parraish Brinson finished fifth. Sixth-place finishers were junior Mikey Griffiths and junior Jason Alex of Brentwood, who wrestles with Baldwin.
Brinson wrestled in the 160 weight class and had a record of 4-2. This was Brinson’s first time making it to WPIALs championships.
“It feels pretty good making it to WPIALs for my last year of wrestling,” Brinson said.
Brinson said Baldwin put on a good performance. Islamov’s performance stood out, he said.
Islamov has now reached WPIAL championships as a freshman.
“It feels good,” Islamov said. “Right now they have me in the eighth seed, so I need an upset to advance.”
Islamov wrestled in the 114 pound weight class and had a record of 4-1. His only loss was to a wrestler from Trinity High School.
“After the matches, my coach would always give me tips on in-match adjustments and not tournament adjustments,” Islamov said.
Brinson shouted out Griffiths, who got a win against an opponent he had lost to in a previous match.
The wrestlers will compete at Canon-McMillan High School High School this Friday in the WPIAL individual championships.
