With Mike Tomlin’s departure, many changes are being made on the Steelers’ coaching staff.
The biggest of these changes is the hiring of Head Coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy was previously a head coach for the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. With the Packers, McCarthy won Super Bowl XLV.
McCarthy has developed many greats at the quarterback position, including Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, and Dak Prescott. He should be able to help the Steelers in their quest to find a franchise quarterback.
The Steelers usually hire defensive-minded head coaches, with Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and most recently, Mike Tomlin. McCarthy is more of an offensive-minded head coach, previously having been the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints. While this is abnormal for the Steelers, it may help them develop a dominant offense.
McCarthy has a reputation for developing coaching trees. At Green Bay, his tight ends/quarterbacks coach became the New York Giants head coach, and at Dallas, his offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, is now the head coach for the New Orleans Saints.
With McCarthy now at the Steelers, we could see a significant coaching tree develop in the coming years.
The Steelers have also hired Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator. He previously held the same position for the Las Vegas Raiders. Hopefully Graham can use the Steelers’ defensive weapons to help them develop a top defense.
They also hired offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio. He was previously the Minnesota Vikings’ passing game coordinator and tight ends coach. The Steelers struggled offensively last season, so Angelichio should be able to get them back on track.
The Steelers also brought in offensive line coach James Campen and assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans. These two will help the Steelers’ struggling offensive line develop and give our future quarterback more time to pass.
Tomlin kept a relatively small coaching staff, but now, with McCarthy, they are hiring a few more staff members to gain more eyes on the field. All of these new hires, in combination with the many 2026 draft picks, hopefully will lead to a great 2026-2027 season and a run in the playoffs.
