The winter guard and indoor percussion teams both placed second in a home competition on Saturday.
The guard earned a score of 69.0 in the competition. Junior Chloe Barnhart was happy with the results.
“It’s higher than any of us expected, so we’re really proud of that score,” Barnhart said.
Freshman Alexis Dietz said freshman Steven Winschel performed very well, noting that he threw a “seven” – 7 spins in the air – and caught it.
“The crowd went crazy for that,” Dietz said.
Among the other guard teams, Deer Lakes stood out, placing first with a score of 71.
The Highlander winter guard has high hopes for the future.
“We’ve never scored first place throughout my years, so since we scored second place at this last competition, hopefully we can get there,” Barnhart said.
Dietz agreed.
“I hope we get really good scores, and I’m hoping to place first or second in championships,” Dietz said.
Baldwin’s indoor percussion team also placed second in their category with a score of 79.25. Captain Leland Lepperd was a key factor in the team’s placement, Barnhart said.
“Leland led his team to a very successful performance,” Barnhart said.
St. Clairsville High School placed first, with a score of 81.3. Another strong team was Kiski, which finished with a score of 73.
“Red Devil placed first, but the best overall performance was Kiski,” Barnhart said.
Both Baldwin squads compete next Saturday at McGuffey High School.
