It is time for Pitt basketball to move on from Head Coach Jeff Capel. After the team’s 47-67 loss to No.17 Virginia Cavaliers on Tuesday, it is evident that Capel’s time at Pitt should be over.
Pitt lost that game because the team outcoached and outhustled. Pitt committed 17 turnovers and Virginia was able to score 23 points off those turnovers.
With the loss, Pitt is last in the ACC with a conference record of 2-8 and an overall record of 9-14. Pitt has been outmatched in practically every conference game they have played in, with their only two wins coming against two teams near the bottom of the conference standings.
Capel has done a horrible job of crafting a roster capable of even attempting to compete in the ACC. The team also has lost games to Hofstra and Quinnipiac, who compete in mid- to low-major conferences.
On Jan. 17, Pitt lost 100-59 to No. 20 Louisville. The loss added another level of embarrassment to an already bad season for Pitt.
This year would serve as a fitting end for Capel’s eight-season reign at Pitt. His overall record at Pitt is 123-121. On paper, it might look like Capel is a solid enough coach at Pitt, but taking a deeper dive shows that he has been nothing but sub-par.
Capel has just one March Madness appearance during his time at Pitt. In the 2022-23 season, Pitt made March Madness and won two games before losing to Xavier in the second round.
In the 2023-24 season, Pitt would have had a greater chance at making March Madness if the team did not have two late-season losses to Wake Forest and Clemson. Capel would waste Blake
