The Baldwin girls basketball team defeated Uniontown on Friday, 66-60.
Senior Laci Bernotas said the Highlanders did well on defense.
“We got easy steals off of our press,” Bernotas said.
Senior Isabella Niles said Uniontown was unable to counter several of the skills and strategies that the Highlanders have been working on.
“We stayed aggressive and did well passing the ball to each other,” Niles said. “We were just a much faster team and just a lot more physical than them.”
Senior Laci Bernotas said her sister, junior Lynsey Bernotas, stood out for the Highlanders. Bernotas scored 29 points.
“She kept the game under control,” Laci Bernotas said. “She really wanted to be a threat in the middle.”
Niles agreed.
“She just kept taking it, and they weren’t stopping her for a time,” Niles said.
Senior Jules Ott was another standout, scoring 11 points for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders had a strong lead before Uniontown began to come back in the second half. But the Highlanders were able to keep their lead due to their bench.
“Our bench is the best, and they are always cheering when we are down,” Bernotas said.
The team is currently 16-3 overall, with an 8-2 record in WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 play. Baldwin is in second place in the section behind TJ.
The season has gone very well, though the team continues to work, Niles said.
“We’ve definitely had our ups and downs, but we’re learning as we go, and we’ve been pretty successful as we’re still learning,” Niles said. “We need to know game situations better – when we need to run the floor and when to slow the ball down and waste time on the clock.”
The team’s next game is on the road against Bethel Park tonight at 7:45 p.m.
