The Baldwin girls basketball team defeated Albert Gallatin on Wednesday, 69-14.
Freshman Alia Bernotas said the Highlanders did well with their teamwork.
“We did a good job playing fast and working together as a team,” she said. “We moved the ball well, took advantage of scoring chances, and got an early lead that helped us stay in control.”
Senior Isabella Niles agreed with Bernotas, adding that they “did a good job working on things that we sometimes struggle with.”
Niles said Albert Gallatin had great energy throughout the game.
“Albert Gallatin kept positive energy, especially their coach,” she said. “He worried about his team’s performance and how they could do things better.”
Bernotas agreed.
“They played hard and did not give up during the game,” Bernotas said. “Even when we were up, they kept hustling and trying to make plays.”
Three Highlanders scored double-digit points, keeping them ahead throughout the game. Junior Kelsey Meyer scored 10 points, senior Jules Ott scored 11 points, and junior Lynsey Bernotas scored 16 points.
Bernotas also felt that she had made some personal improvements to her gameplay.
“When I was in the game, I had really strong takes and played hard,” Bernotas said.
Throughout the game, Baldwin averaged 15 points each quarter, scoring 25 in the first, 17 in the middle two quarters, and 10 in the fourth quarter, while they held Albert Gallatin to five points in each of the first two quarters and two points in each of the final two quarters.
Bernotas felt sophomore Natalya Brisco stood out for the Highlanders.
“Natalya played well and made good moves in the post,” she said.
Niles agreed.
“I think Natalya Brisco stood out. She got a good amount of rebounds, made good passes, and had good post moves to finish at the basket,” Niles said.
Niles also believes the team has made great progress this season.
“It’s the best we have done in a while, and there is so much more room to grow, especially for playoffs,” she said.
The team is currently 15-3 overall, with a 7-2 record in WPIAL Class 5A Section 4 play. Baldwin is in second place in the section behind TJ.
The team’s next game is at home against Uniontown at 6 p.m. Friday.
