The Minnesota Timberwolves should be one of the best teams in the NBA this season. But there are a few concerns the team should work on.
The Wolves are in great shape roster-wise as they have stars like Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels, and Julius Randle, who usually are the leading scorers on the team.
Edwards is arguably the best player in the league, although many would argue for Victor Wembanyama or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Edwards is averaging 29.9 points per game and 35.2 minutes per game. Edwards was recently left off the 2026 All-Star roster, which has created major debate in the NBA community.
In the Timberwolves’ most recent loss to the Jazz, McDaniels had 18 points, Edwards dropped 38, and Rendle had 19 points. This loss left the Wolves in seventh place in the Western Conference, far lower than where they should be.
Guard Donte DiVincenzo has recently found his spark, as he has been able to help the Timberwolves hold themselves together. He has 15 points against Utah and eight assists.
Big problems with the Wolves include a weak bench, as Rob Dillingham and Mike Conley have not been able to get the job done at the point guard position. This forces the Wolves to play Naz Reid and McDaniels on the court at the same time, which creates a problem on defense, although both of these players are amazing on their own.
Though Rudy Gobert has recently been good at free-throw shooting, the whole team struggles with it and needs to get the percentage up. The team also lacks consistency overall.
On Jan. 11, Minnesota beat the Spurs in a thriller 103-104, with Edwards playing amazingly and the team really clicking. But then on Jan. 17, the Wolves lost to San Antonio 123-126.
The Timberwolves can defeat the top teams in the league, but they do not show it every night. They even lost to the Houston Rockets, who are a team being carried by their star player, James Harden.
The inconsistent starting offense and defense, which forces bench players like Bones Hyland to step up, creates major problems on the team. The Wolves should consider trading Dillingham for future value in the draft.
They should also consider replacing Head Coach Chris Finch. He admittedly has done a good job with the team in the past, but he does not seem to mesh with the current roster.
Though the Wolves are in great shape to make the NBA playoffs, and if they are able to get it together, then they should be able to make a deep playoff run.
