Baldwin’s girls basketball team won 46-37 against Canon Mac on Friday.
Senior Laci Bernotas said that going into the game, the Highlanders had a positive attitude.
“Going into the game against Canon Mac, we were confident and focused,” Bernotas said. “We knew it was going to be a tough matchup, so we came in ready to compete and give full effort.”
Baldwin started the game strong, setting the tone in the first half with strong defense and ball movement.
In the second half of the game, Canon Mac made a run. But Bernotas said Baldwin was able to maintain its composure and responded with big stops and key baskets.
Bernotas said that their defense is one of the team’s biggest strengths, as well as their communication.
“We shared the ball well and trusted each other to make plays,” Bernotas said.
Sophomore forward Hannah Prilla agreed.
“We played good team defense and had rebounds,” she said.
She said Canon Mac battled throughout the game.
“They didn’t give up,” she said. “They played hard the whole time.”
Bernotas said Canon Mac’s physicality is what made them such a tough opponent to face.
“They played fast and aggressive, which forced us to stay locked in the entire game,” Bernotas said.
Prilla said Bernotas was a standout player, especially when it came to playing defense.
“Laci plays good overall defense,” Prilla said. “You can always depend on her stealing the ball, and her shot was on again.”\
Bernotas added that senior Bella Niles played a great game as well.
“She made big plays, brought great energy, and helped us on both ends of the floor,” Bernotas said.
Even though Baldwin came out with the win, Bernotas said that there are still some aspects of Baldwin’s play that can be improved upon.
“We can improve by limiting turnovers, finishing better at the rim, and staying consistent with our energy for all four quarters,” Bernotas said.
Prilla said that Baldwin hopes to improve at finishing their layups.
The next game is at 6 p.m. tonight away against Peters Township.
