The boys swim team won while the girls team lost to Woodland Hills on Thursday. 

Senior Katie Gruendler thought both teams did well against a talented opponent. 

“Our meet on Wednesday ended up being rescheduled. So we had ended up swimming away two days in a row, and that’s always tough. But everyone was able to push through and do well against a really hard team,” Gruendler said. 

For the boys, senior Brayden Kuch stood out during the breaststroke and his two relays. 

“He swam two events in a row last night, which is always really rough. And he was able to make it through a tough set,” Gruendler said. 

Although the girls did not win, Gruendler thought freshman Denise Roush stood out. 

“Denise Roush swam the 200 freestyle. It’s a hard event, and she did really well with it,” Gruendler said. 

Although the team did well on some events, Gruendler knows the team needs to improve in a few areas.

“We need to improve on the basics, work on our starts and turns – especially our relays. That will help us get moving quicker,” Gruendler said. 

Freshman Melina Altieri agreed. 

“We need to start focusing more on our strokes and the basics,” Altieri said. 

Gruendler credited Woodland Hills for their skills and teamwork. 

“They’re just a really good team overall. Their girls relay qualified for WPIALs on Thursday night. They also do really well with supporting each other. They were always at the end of the pool, being really loud when each event was announced,” Gruendler said. 

Altieri agreed. 

“Their swimmers were really fast, and they swam so cleanly. Their strokes went really well. They overall did great,” Altieri said. 

Baldwin’s next meet is away at Fox Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
