Baldwin’s unified bocce team were 3-2 winners in overtime over West Mifflin in their first home match of the season on Tuesday.
After both of Baldwin’s teams won and lost one game each, Baldwin and West Mifflin advanced to what is called the golden frame, a one-frame tiebreaker. Baldwin was able to come out with the win.
Senior Ella Schwarzmiller said it felt good to win their first home match.
“The boys basketball team was there to cheer us all on,” Schwarzmiller said. “So that made a lot of the athletes really happy. It was really cool.”
Senior Allison Lease agreed that winning their first home match was important for her and for the team.
“It felt great to win our first home match, since it is my senior year and I only have a few left,” Lease said.
It was an overall good performance by the team, with Schwartzmiller and Lease agreeing that the team had great use of strategy during the match.
“I think we worked really well as a team to execute the strategies that we had discussed during practice,” Schwartzmiller said.
Schwartzmiller complimented teammate Nathan Davis on his performance during the match.
Lease added that senior John Shandor also helped the team secure the win.
“He did a great job by really thinking about how hard and fast to roll the ball when it was his turn,” Lease said.
Schwartzmiller and Lease agreed that combating West Mifflin’s strategies was tough.
“The second game we played was especially challenging,” Schwartzmiller said.
Going into future matches, Lease thinks that Baldwin could still improve upon a couple of things.
“As a team, we could improve overall strategy and how we place the pallina,” Lease said.
With this win, the team’s record is now 2-0.
Their next match is at home against South Park next Tuesday.
