The Baldwin gymnastics team finished in fifth place in the Happy New Year Invitational on Sunday at Kiski Area High School.
The invitational included schools such as Thomas Jefferson, West Allegheny, Burrell, Central Valley, and Hempfield.
“Our team score was a 137, but the highest score was a 142 from TJ,” junior Charlotte Fauls said.
She said T.J. also was a respectful opponent.
“TJ has great sportsmanship and is fun to compete with,” she said.
Most of the other teams did really well on the floor, senior Vivien Skalos said. She believes Baldwin can improve its consistency.
“We can improve the most on floor and bars, and I think just getting more consistent in our skills,” Skalos said.
Fauls said the team needs to work on “mental consistency and making sure we encourage our team when we are down or make mistakes.”
However, Baldwin performed strongly on the beam.
“We had a really great day on beam. We all got really good scores,” Skalos said.
Fauls agreed.
“We did really well on beam. We kept an average of high eights and only had one fall,” she said.
Fauls credited senior Jewell Stevens for having an uplifting attitude during the invitational.
“Her attitude was great the whole time, and she kept the team up,” she said.
The Highlanders are currently third in their section. Their next meet will be at home at 7 p.m. Friday against North Hills.
