Boxer Anthony Joshua defeated onetime social media figure Jake Paul in the sixth round of their fight on Friday, which aired on Netflix. 

Joshua, 36, was expected to win this fight, and a loss would have jeopardized his reputation as a successful fighter. Paul, 28, had claimed he could upset the former Olympic Gold Medalist, but that did not happen. 

For most of the fight, Paul frolicked around the ring, almost looking scared to try to punch or even counter Joshua. He would dodge attacks by diving for Joshua’s legs. Midway through the match, the referee was encouraging the two to actually fight. 

After this, Joshua stepped up and immediately made Paul work hard, tiring him out. This led to Paul getting his jaw broken after Joshua connected with a right hook in the sixth round.

Paul still continued to stick his tongue out, trying to taunt Joshua, even though the fight was over. 

Fans were expecting more out of the fight, possibly even an early knockout by Joshua. Fans online summarized the fight as “another mediocre Paul fight.” 

Joshua still got the job done, even though it took longer than expected. In the early hours of Saturday morning, Paul had to get his jaw repaired and even had some of his teeth removed. 

Both boxers were no doubt paid well, but online accounts differed as to how much each fighter made.

Paul did fight with heart throughout every round, even though it was not pretty. This fight solidified him as no longer a “wannabe” boxer with a YouTube background. He is now a boxer with a YouTuber background. 

Before the fight, Paul said he had nothing to lose, which he was right. The majority of fans did not expect Paul to win, so for him to lose in the fashion that he did takes nothing away from him.

As Paul drinks out of a straw for the next week, he will be able to regroup and look forward to a more hopeful 2026.
