The Baldwin girls basketball team defeated Penn-Trafford on Wednesday for their fourth consecutive win, 52-47.
Senior Isabella Niles said Baldwin did well with sticking to the game plan.
“We didn’t let them control our game, and we did what we needed to do,” she said.
Senior Laci Bernotas said the team as a whole had a good attitude throughout the game.
“The energy was great. Our bench stayed loud, and on the court, we kept feeding off each other. That vibe helps us stay focused and keeps momentum in our favor,” Bernotas said.
Bernotas also credited Baldwin’s defense.
“Our defense was the biggest piece on why we did well. Coach Jamal (Woodson) told us to have a hand on their shooters and make sure we know which ones can knock them down, and we knew and executed that,” Bernotas said.
Bernotas thought her sister, junior Lynsey Bernotas, stood out for the Highlanders.
“This past game she showed her game and showed how huge she is to this team. She was our top scorer of 19 points and consistently is always trying to look for teammates too,” Laci Bernotas said.
Niles credited Penn-Trafford for how well they played.
“They did well passing the ball and getting open three-pointers,” she said.
Niles said Baldwin still needs to work on finishing their games.
“We can’t make silly mistakes because sooner or later, they can cost us the game,” Niles said.
Bernotas agreed, saying that for the next game, against Peters Township, there is more improvement needed.
“We need to clean up our turnovers and focus on boxing out. Peters is physical, so securing rebounds and taking care of the ball will be huge,” Bernotas said.
The season has been going very well for the Highlanders.
“We all have been putting together full games as in defensively, offensively, and the energy we’ve been bringing,” Bernotas said. “Everyone has stepped up and is playing their role, and it’s showing throughout these wins.”
The team’s overall record is 4-1.
The next game is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Peters.
