The Baldwin girls and boys basketball teams swept their games over the weekend.
The teams played a double-header on Friday night, with both boys and girls teams winning.
The girls faced Pine-Richland and won 61-44. Senior Laci Bernotas believes the victory came about because of how well the team played as a whole.
“As a team, we played together really well. We communicated on defense, shared the ball on offense, and stayed focused from the start to finish,” Bernotas said.
Bernotas complimented senior Jules Ott and junior Kelsey Meyer for their individual performances.
“Jules Ott played very well, controlled the court, and contributed a lot,” Bernotas said, “Kelsey Meyer played very well too. She had a lot of steals and played hard.”
Despite losing, Pine-Richland still had a strong defensive game, she said.
“Pine-Richland played strong defense and moved the ball well. We rebounded hard and took advantage of scoring opportunities,” Bernotas said.
Overall the team played as a unit in order to take the win.
“Our defense, teamwork, and ability to stay composed under pressure really led to the win,” she said.
The boys, meanwhile, played Northgate on Friday and won big, 86-32.
Junior Evan Golvash believes the victory was due to Baldwin’s strong offensive plays.
“We played fast and made shots on offense,” Golvash said.
Golvash complimented Northgate on their offensive play.
“They got the ball to the best player and he was able to score,” Golvash said.
Golvash said the victory helps him look forward to a good season.
“It feels good to have a good win at the start of the season,” Golvash said.
The girls played on Saturday afternoon as well, taking down Upper St. Clair in overtime, 51-45.
“We worked together, stayed disciplined and supported each other on both ends of the floor,” Bernotas said.
She complimented her sister Lyndsey Bernotas, a junior, for her work offensively.
“Lyndsey Bernotas had a lot of assists and knew how to control our team on the offensive side,” she said.
Bernotas said Upper St. Clair put up a good fight.
“Upper St. Clair played aggressively and challenged us defensively. They made us work for our shots and pushed the pace.”
These victories make Bernotas confident going into the rest of the season.
“It feels great to get wins early in the season. It builds confidence and motivates us to keep improving as we move forward,” she said.
The boys will face Mt. Lebanon, away, on Tuesday. The girls play at home against South Park tonight at 7:30 p.m.
