Pitt’s basketball team already has won big games this season, such as a win over Ohio State. But its inconsistent play early on could create problems for its playoff hopes throughout the season.
While the Panthers beat Ohio State in a thriller, 69-68, they have also lost three games – to WVU, UCF, and Quinnipiac – leaving their record at 5-3 already on the season.
DeMarco Miner, the primary point guard, has played well throughout the year, but not the best. He had 18 points against Ohio State, but only three points against Quinnipiac. The differences in those point totals are the key to determining whether Pitt is an okay team or a potentially great team.
Luckily, freshman forward Roman Siulepa stepped up against Quinnipiac to score 20 points. But he also has had problems with his own consistency, only scoring two against Ohio State. This shows that no one on the team is consistent enough.
Cameron Cohren has been the most consistent, but he does not look confident with the ball when it is in his hands. He appears to constantly want to get rid of it. Yet he has regularly scored over 10 points per game and produced on offense and defense for the Panthers.
Pitt’s best player, Brandin Cummings, got hurt after the UCF game. Against Central Florida, he had seven points. Before this, he had scored 19 and 18 points in the first two games of the year.
Their final starter, Omari Witherspoon, has had a rough start to his collegiate career. In 38 minutes, he only scored 11 points against WVU, and in 25 minutes, he only scored three against UCF.
Other players to watch on the basketball team include Barry Dunning Jr. and Nojus Indrusaitis.
The team does not seem to bond together the best, and they have lots of inconsistencies while working with one another.
Pitt needs to lock down who will be their one number-one scorer instead of relying on someone different every time they step onto the court.
