The Marvel Rivals esports team lost in the quarterfinals of the state playoffs on Wednesday, falling to Devon Preparatory High School of eastern Pennsylvania, 2-0.
The Highlanders had been undefeated in the regular season. The team got a bye in the first round of playoffs due to a forfeit by Muhlenberg High School.
Senior Braydon Parker credited Devon Prep’s skills in the match. Despite the Highlanders’ usual communication strength, Devon Prep was able to throw the team off.
“It seemed like against this team in particular, we just couldn’t keep track of what was happening, and that was a real big issue for us,” Parker said.
Head Coach Nathan Elias agreed.
“We had some trouble with some unexpected team compositions from the opponents, and we just weren’t quite able to adapt,” Elias said.
Parker said the team needs to expand their skills for next season.
“We need to start diversifying in what we’re good at instead of sticking to one plan,” Parker said.
Despite their loss, Elias is still very proud of the team and their season.
“I am very proud of the team and what they accomplished throughout the year — undefeated regular season — and the teamwork and preparation they put into every match,” Elias said. “While we didn’t end up with the result we wanted, I think we can be very happy with the work we put in and the successes we had.”
