Friday marks one month since the NBA’s opening day, and some teams are starting to shape up while several rookies are making names for themselves early.
In the Eastern Conference, the standings have seemingly flipped from last year, with some teams having shocking success.
The Toronto Raptors are in first in the conference following a disappointing season where they finished eleventh and missed the playoffs for their third consecutive season.
The Detroit Pistons, in second, and the Boston Celtics, in ninth, have nearly swapped places due in part to the absence of Celtics star Jayson Tatum. Cade Cunningham has led the Pistons, with Jalen Duran and Duncan Robinson also contributing greatly to the team’s success.
In the Western Conference, much less has changed, with four of the top five teams being the same as last year.
The San Antonio Spurs have knocked the Los Angeles Clippers out of the top five, mostly due to Victor Wembanyama’s great start to the season. He is shaping up to be a top player in the league. But the Spurs will most likely struggle to keep this spot with Wembanyama out with a recent injury.
Lebron James had his season debut Tuesday after recovering from his injury, and he helped keep the Los Angeles Lakers’ momentum with a win over the Utah Jazz. James put up 11 points and an impressive 12 assists. His minutes are back to where they were pre-injury.
Some rookies have had fiery starts to the season, with one of the most notable ones being V.J. Edgecombe of the Philadelphia 76ers. He has shown many flashes of greatness and consistently makes experienced plays.
But the leader in the rookie of the year race is Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets, who is averaging 17.6 points per game.
Cooper Flagg, meanwhile, is one of the most anticipated rookies of all time. He has shown he has the confidence to make plays, but he must work on his consistency before he can become a star.
Overall, the league has had an exciting start with many teams and players to keep an eye on.
