The collaboration project featuring music legend Elton John and 11-time Grammy winner Brandi Carlile, Who Believes in Angels? is a dance worthy yet emotionally deep album that explores themes of love, life, and many things in between.
This album does not fall into the unfortunate trend of older artists falling off and releasing uninspired and fatigued art.
The album kicks off strong with “The Rose of Laura Nyro,” which starts off with a mysterious, spacey sound before turning into a sort of glam-rock track. This song sets the tone for the rest of the album, which stays consistent throughout while keeping every track fresh.
Most of the songs feature a blend of John and Carlile’s voices, which have very pleasing harmony and contrast to each other. An example of this exceptional sound is showcased on the title track.
One of the best songs on the album is actually a solo from Carlile, which offers a different feel from the majority of the other tracks. “You Without Me” is a simple love song showcasing her voice and emotion, giving it a very indie feel.
The lyrics also stand out. Too often, dull, generic lyrics are the downfall of an otherwise great album. This release has well thought-out lyrics that are reminiscent of the distinct style that Elton John has always had.
An example of great lyricism is found in “When This Old World Is Done With Me,” which is a solo ballad from Elton John. It showcases his acceptance of mortality and life’s struggles.
The album is a well rounded, nostalgic, and original project that would not be seen as a letdown by fans of Elton John.
