Amidst his drama with Kendrick Lamar, the rapper Drake has collaborated with R&B artist PartyNextDoor to release his eighth studio album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U.
Drake is arguably the most popular rapper in the world, and his albums are known for their seamless flows paired with top-tier lyricism and nearly perfect production.
He has built up a strong reputation, earned enough money, and solidified his legacy enough that no album of his will be a flop. But being satisfied with his position seems to be a trend for him lately. And it is seen throughout this album.
This record is basically the same Drake listeners have seen since his 2022 album Her Loss. This is not necessarily a totally bad thing, but listeners pretty much knew what they would hear on this album – which takes the excitement away from a new project.
Drake has never been known for his creativity, but in previous albums there was much more hunger and experimentation. On this album, it just is not there. This is a solid album, with a few hit songs, but nothing worth boasting about.
“Meet Your Padre,” featuring Chino Pacas, is out of place on this album. It is unusual hearing Drake rap in an attempted Mexican accent, and it is not very good.
Although the album is dull, there is some good music on it. Drake needs to go in the direction of the song “Small Town Fame” because it allows him to show the skills that blew him up: He is a rapper who can sing.
But overall, there is not any concept or creativity behind this album. It is just a dull project slapped with Drake’s signature style.
