Freshman Mike Delehanty does not let his visual disability get in the way of his artistic aspirations, and now he has a first-place award to show for that determination.
Delehanty won first place in a nationwide art competition held by the American Printing House for the Blind. Delehanty won for a self-portrait he did, in the division for seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade students.
“It was something we did in (an earlier) art class,” Delehanty said.
Delehanty said he isn’t yet taking any art classes at the high school, but he is looking forward to taking one. He also wants to pursue art as a career.
When asked about the impact art has had on him, Delehanty said, “I am not able to do a lot of things with my disability, but in art I am never held back. I can do anything I want.”
