The Fighting Highlanders competitive cheer team performs across the area.

The competitive cheer team was named grand champions at the South Hills Showdown in Bethel Park on Sunday, earning the highest scores of all schools.

“We were really thrilled to get grand champions because we got it last year as well,” sophomore Keira Kozak said.

Freshman Riya Nadik said junior Addy Holmes stood out in the game day routine.

She “really engaged with the crowd. She has come a long way in cheer so it’s impressive to see,” Nadik said.

Both the game day and mat teams finished first at the Bethel Park competition.

On Saturday the cheer team competed at Butler at Tornado Fest, where the mat team placed first and game day finished second.

“The team did really well putting energy in both days. It took a lot of stress on our bodies, and we were able to push through,” Kozak said.

Baldwin’s next competition will be Nov. 19 at Johnstown for another regional competition.
