    Healthy lifestyle motivates students

One of the most commonly broken New Year’s resolutions is getting in shape, but some Baldwin students are actually following through with this goal and getting more dedicated as summer approaches.

While there is disagreement as to how prevalent the trend is, those who are working towards fitness have a variety of motivation.

Anthony Sendro, a senior, started feeling lazy after being sidelined from football and wrestling after suffering a concussion last year.

“This year I was just sick of not doing anything anymore and decided to start lifting and being proactive,” Sendro said.

He lifts in the weight room two to four days a week and tries to run as much as possible.

He also tries to avoid any unnecessary and bad foods and has a protein drink after every workout.

Kayla Keefer, a senior, was inspired by her family to work towards better health.

“My whole family is trying to become healthier and have a healthier lifestyle, and I think it’s fantastic,” Keefer said.

Her regimen includes going to the gym as often as she can and doing a lot of running.

She has been focused on making healthier food choices, but she doesn’t go to extremes.

“Changing something like this does not come overnight. It takes motivation,” Keefer said.

Jake Sadler and Deelan Rashan, both seniors, have taken up fitness as a team.

The two lift and work out together almost every day and find that they motivate each other.

Sadler and Rashan find working out to be a great way to relieve stress and anger.

In addition to working out, Sadler is extremely into healthy eating and is in it for the long-term.

“I want to be able to help out my family as long as possible and eating healthy gives me the peace of mind that I can do that,” Sadler said.

Rashan thinks that fitness is becoming a trend at Baldwin.

“Fitness is definitely bigger than it ever was at Baldwin. It seems like everyone wants to work out for their own personal reasons and not just for a sport,” Rashan said.

Physical education teacher Tim Laughlin, though, had a different perspective.

“I’ve actually been noticing a decline in fitness. Kids don’t want to put the commitment or time in anymore,” Laughlin said.

For those working to get in shape, Laughlin advises that they do the proper research first. There are a lot of workouts, diet plans, and products out there, and it can be confusing as to what to pick, Laughlin said.

“Take a personal responsibility and realize that not everything out there is good for you,” Laughlin said.
