Audiences discover new ideas in Nexflix film

The Netflix original film The Discovery raises topics that society rarely addresses but people think about often. The film, however, suffers from huge flaws.

The sci-fi film takes place two years after Dr. Thomas Harber (Robert Redford) discovers proof of the afterlife. Since the proof was exposed, the suicide rate has risen dramatically and Harbor’s son, Will (Jason Segel), is skeptical of his father’s discovery. Throughout the story, Will and his romantic interest, Isla (Rooney Mara), cope their pasts and discover a twist on what the afterlife truly means.

The film does not shy away from topics such as mortality, regret, and the meaning of life. It raises multiple questions on these topics — which is both its strength and its weakness.

The movie juggles multiple ideas at once. It is often difficult to see where the film is going and what the purpose of it is, which can be thrilling and intriguing but also annoyingly confusing. Therefore, the film’s biggest flaw is that it struggles to be a cohesive piece.

The film does keep viewers’ eyes on the screen throughout the entirety of the story, while also presenting challenging ideas. Most importantly, it raises questions about the meaning of life and the role of adversity that occurs in it, regardless of whether there is an afterlife or not.
