Gorillaz album falls short of goals, but still offers big moments

In spring of 2016, Damon Albarn, former Blur lead singer and co-founder and primary songwriter for the pop rock/rap band Gorillaz, asked Pusha-T to picture what would happen if Trump won the presidency.

Albarn was beginning to work on new music for Gorillaz. He envisioned making party music for the end of the world.

Albarn invited a variety of diverse performers to be a part of this project, from Vince Staples, Popcaan, Benjamin Clementine, and D.R.A.M., to Pusha T, Grace Jones, and De La Soul. Even Albarn’s old Oasis nemesis Noel Gallagher popped in for a collaboration in “We Got The Power.”

Albarn doesn’t use these guests to their full potential, and the results don’t really rise to the occasion of being anthems for the end of the world.

On the other hand, many of the guests come through and do a spectacular job both artistically and thematically, such as D.R.A.M. in “Andromeda.” Zebra Katz, Kilo Kish, and Imani Vonshà mix perfectly with the amazing beat in “Out Of Body,” and the Gorillaz veteran collaborators in De La Soul create another beautiful mash-up in “Momentz.”

Albarn finds a way to keep things moving quickly and smoothly over the 26 songs on the deluxe edition, and despite all the guests, this is still Albarn’s solo project and he wants listeners to come along for the ride.
