When people got a taste of the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack, the musical theater fans who had been anxiously awaiting a new soundtrack to memorize since Hamilton knew that they had found what they were looking for.

This new musical, about a teenage boy with social anxiety disorder named Evan Hansen who gets caught up in the aftermath of a classmate’s death, has taken the musical theater world by storm.

Fans find themselves swooning over Ben Platt’s key change in “Waving Through a Window” and tearing up in Laura Dreyfuss’s raw and truthful ballad in “Requiem” as Zoe, the sister of the boy who died.

Listeners see the honest attempt of Evan to help Zoe, his longtime crush, in finding closure in her brother’s death in “If I Could Tell Her.” Each song is filled with emotion and realistic conviction by the characters.

Lovers of traditional musicals may not find this heavily pop-influenced soundtrack appealing, but it is the fresh new sound that today’s young people have been searching for. Although the style of music in modern musicals has shifted to a pop style, it is a testament to how musical theater is constantly changing and adapting to the time.
