Supt. Dr. Randal Lutz played basketball in high school and college, but he probably never faced an opponent like the one he will on Monday night.

In a charity game for Baldwin girls basketball, a team of Baldwin staff and coaches will take on the high-flying Harlem Wizards in the gym.

Tickets will be $12 for students or $15 general admission, and will be available for sale at the door.

Lutz’s experience with basketball goes back to his high school days here at Baldwin.

“I played the position of forward and center, back in 1984-1986,” Lutz said.

Lutz will also be playing the forward position against the Wizards, who specialize in dunks and trick plays. He said he has modest goals for the evening.

“I hope to do well, not get hurt, and not make a fool out of myself,” Lutz said.

Lutz will not be the only experienced basketball player on the team. Boys basketball Coach Joe Urmann will also be joining the team against the Wizards.

“I was a shooting guard and I grew up in a Ridgway, Pa.  I played at Elk County Catholic High School in St. Mary’s, Pa.,” Urmann said.

The team has been having practices in the gym, where they have been preparing hard for their run against the Wizards.

“Sounds to me like these guys are pretty good,” Urmann said of the Wizards. “I think we have our work cut out for us.”

Another important recruit for Baldwin’s team is girls basketball Coach Nicole Presto. Presto will be playing center, point guard, and small forward Monday night.

Presto also had previous training in the sport, playing in high school and college as well.

Presto revealed that the team has secretly been watching the Wizards’ YouTube videos, trying to learn the team’s moves to prepare for the big game.

“Dr. Lutz has drawn up a couple of really nice plays for our squad,” Presto said.

Lutz remains hopeful for the outcome of the game.

“We expect to win.  Actually we hope to just not get hurt,” Lutz said.
