Thursday’s cross country meet at Mingo Creek Park was a special one for senior Casey Conboy, and he responded by running a strong race.

Conboy finished in second place out of 186 runners from 27 different schools in the Mingo Classic, a race organized by Baldwin in honor of Coach Bonita “Bunny” Schmidt, who has battled breast cancer throughout her life and is now fighting stage four bone cancer.

“It made me happy to see the smile on her face when I finished because I run every race for her,” Conboy said.

Every team that competes at the race wears pink shirts and poses for photos while standing in the formation of a big ribbon to show their support for Schmidt.

“It’s nice to see the support from other schools,” Conboy said.
