The Flatbush Zombies, a psychedelic rap trio from Brooklyn, has dropped its debut album 3001: A Laced Odyssey. The group includes rappers Darko Meech, Zombie Juice, and Eric “The Architect” Elliot, who also produces all of the group’s beats. With their differing rap styles and catchy hooks, the group brings together a very diverse set of sounds. One example comes in their song “R.I.P.C.D.,” which features a classic kick drum and snare beat in the background as the group says “rest in peace” to the CD — a nostalgic tribute to the glory days of the music industry. In another song, called “A Spike Lee Joint,” they talk about staying independent, explaining how they have been working together since high school and don’t plan on selling out now. This is one of the more jazzy tracks; while Meech is not on this one Elliot and Juice do a good job bringing yet another type of rap onto the album. Compared to the group’s two previous mixtapes, this album sounds cleaner and more official.
