The Baldwin baseball team lost to Central Catholic 5-4 on Thursday.

The Highlanders were up by two runs going into the last inning but ended up losing on a base-clearing hit with the bases loaded.

Senior Adam Ledbetter said it was a disappointing way to end the series against the Vikings.

“We wanted this game to go our way badly to try and turn the season around,” Ledbetter said. “We have to be able to close out games like these if we want to win more games.”

Despite losing the series, senior Dylan Lacher said that keeping the games close gives the team confidence for the rest of their season.

“All we learned from this series was that we can compete with teams,” Lacher said. “We know we are a better team than what our record says.”

Lacher complimented senior pitcher Adam Degenhardt on his performance: six innings pitched, allowing just four hits and two runs.

“It was definitely his best performance this year,” he said. “He gave us the best chance he could. We just have to be better all around to close out games.”

The Highlanders play next on Monday at Canon-Mac at 4 p.m.
