Running out of TV shows and movies to stream? The Purbalite is here to help, with another installment of our What to Binge Watch feature.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica, or Magical Girl Madoka Magica, is a magical girl anime series that is significantly darker than it originally appears.

The show focuses on five middle school girls who have magical powers: Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi, Mami Tomoe, Sayaka Miki, and Kyouko Sakura. They all were given wishes in exchange for fighting “witches,” who are beings that were born from negative desires.

The first three episodes are lovely, but the tone becomes much darker by the end of the third. The show becomes nightmarish and accurately shows how dangerous being a magical girl can be.

The animation for some of the witches is creepy. Other witches appear adorable, but they turn incredibly violent.

Overall, the animation gets higher in quality and significantly smoother as the series progresses. The storyline is also an interesting concept for the magical girl anime genre.

While this franchise started as a TV series, it also became a movie series, with the fourth film coming out sometime this year. There is also a side story and many games.

The series is available on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
