The first album that actor/musician Joe Keery released under the stage name Djo, 2019’s Twenty-Twenty, is overlooked in the indie pop genre.
Keery plays Steve Harrington in the TV series Stranger Things. Before releasing Twenty-Twenty, Keery was a part of the band Post Animal.
Songs like “Chateau (Feel Alright)” and “Roddy” have gained popularity on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. Others, like “Tentpole Shangrila” and “Mortal Projections,” have not had much time in the limelight.
“Chateau (Feel Alright)” talks about nostalgia and the longing to relive big moments in life.
The lyrics talk about being homesick for Los Angeles and the summer romance he met through a friend. The song goes on to talk about going to the “Chateau,” a comforting place in his mind. Keery talks about his memory being hazy and blurry, as if he cannot decide if the memory is real or just a dream.
“Roddy” discusses feeling disconnected from the world. Keery urges “Roddy” to step back from the world and take time and focus on himself. As the song progresses the verses become more optimistic and show his journey.
The third song on the album, “Tentpole Shangrila,” discusses the downside of fame. Keery’s fame has become overwhelming and he seems stuck. In another verse, he refers to himself as “Brother Joe,” asking if he has lost himself and his identity due to the fame.
Another song, “Mortal Projections,” seems to be about a faulty relationship. Keery does not know if his lover feels the same way, and he stays up at night thinking about it. The lyrics express confusion over whether Keery should pack all of his things and go or if he should stay.
Overall, compared to popular indie pop albums, Djo’s Twenty Twenty is unique, and people should explore more of his discography.
