The Baldwin ice hockey team opened its season with a 5-2 loss against Upper St. Clair on Thursday.
The Highlanders struggled to keep the puck in the offensive zone throughout the night.
“We weren’t able to hang on to the puck and get good shots on the net,” sophomore Nate Buys said.
Upper St. Clair played an efficient game on offense.
“They were able to convert on their goal-scoring chances,” junior Trevor Brain said.
Although the Highlanders lost, there were some positives from the night.
“Tanner Plinta was definitely our best player with two goals,” Brain said. “Our forecheck was pretty good. They weren’t able to break out easily.”
USC got late empty-net goals, but Baldwin’s defense played well, Buys said.
“Our defense stayed resilient throughout the game and never gave up. We were able to keep them out of our zone,” he said.
Overall, it felt great to be back on the ice for regular-season games, Buys said.
“It’s definitely a good feeling to be back playing again. The team has high hopes for this season,” Buys said.
The Highlanders’ next game is at Bethel Park on Oct. 19.
